Artists' Statement
Meghan Donahue's designs carry an earthly quality. They are
rough and unstructured like a coastline, thoughtful and unyielding
like a sturdy tree, speaking of their very inspiration in nature.
In one-of-a-kind and limited-production handmade jewelry, Meghan
brings unique and endearing qualities from her jewelry to those
who wear it.
Meghan imbues her work with life and personality. Her original
designs combine the elements and textures of nature, the materials
used, and the individuality of the wearer. Natural formations echo
in these metal sculptures. Silver reflects a fading tide. Gold
becomes the thick and thin of a tree branch. Gemstones express
the meandering path of a grain of sand. Each wearable piece of
art embraces the wearer's independent personality.
Meghan Donahue matches jewelry to the individual, understanding
the treasure of putting on that special piece and feeling it resonate
emotionally, artistically, and personally.
Biography
I grew up in a small town in Maine and spent much of my childhood
outdoors playing in nature. Walking through the woods, seeing shapes
in cloud formations, or looking at the patterns a river made as it
carved its way through rock and sand became my inspiration for art.
I attended Massachusetts College of Art in Boston. My major was
sculpture with the intent that I would eventually study masonry and
stone carving. When I found that I could use metal to create backdrops
for my favorite stones, I knew I had discovered a medium I could
work with indefinitely and find joy with on a daily basis.
After I graduated college with a degree in Metal Smithing in 1996,
I decided to move to Ireland where I worked selling jewelry in a
little shop on the west coast of Galway, Ireland for a couple of
years. When I returned to the United States, I studied the colored
gemstones and diamond courses from the Gemological Institute of America,
and the American Gem Society while working under the tutelage of
some very talented jewelers.
After working with several artists over the years, I have embarked
on my own process of design. That feeling of putting on
a piece of jewelry and having it be something that you are proud
to wear while at the same time, it makes you feel beautiful, loved,
treasured or strong, these are the feelings I strive to capture with
my work. |
